    Eye Care for Rhode Island is pleased to offer eye exams, contact lens evaluation and fittings.

    More than 30 million people in the United States wear contact lenses in order to see clearly.


    • Contact lens offer patients the benefit of clear vision without the restrictions and in some cases, cosmetic limitations eyeglasses can create
    • It is also ideal for patients with higher prescriptions which may cause visual distortions and reflections
    • Ideal for patients who lead an active life and participate in sports or athletic activities

    To determine if you are qualified to wear contact lenses, considerations such as your general health, allergies, lens material, corneal health, eyelid health, and visual needs are taken into account. Please inform our scheduling staff if you would to include a contact lens exam in addition to your routine or annual eye exam.


    Follow up and contact lens training:

    If you are new to contact lens or need a refresher course, we also offer one-on-one tutorials so you can comfortably insert, remove and care for your contact lenses. We have a dedicated contact lens training area that allows for proper training. Contact lens is typically not a covered service under most insurance. We do accept VSP and EyeMed vison plans for these services.


    The charge for evaluating and determining your suitability for contact lens wear is not included in the comprehensive exam fee or refraction fee. A comprehensive eye exam must be performed prior to the contact lens fitting. The fitting fee is for professional services and does not include the cost of the lenses. Contact lens fitting and training is required for all new contact lens wearer.


    The following products and services are included in the contact lens fitting and evaluation fee:

    • Professional examination of contact lens fit and power
    • Contact lens related follow-up care for 90 days
    • Trial pair of contact lenses (if available)
    • Professional insertion and removal training (if necessary)
    • Trial size contact lens solution and new contact lens case
    • Certain manufacture rebates available through Eye Care for Rhode Island

    Types of Fitting:  New Patient RX change

    (valid annual eye exam)

    Fee: $70.00 and up

    Lens Type: Based on prescription


    Types of Fitting:  New Basic Fit and Train

    Fee: $110.00

    Lens Type: Soft spheres, excluding monovision


    Types of Fitting: New Complex Fit and Train

    Fee: $150.00

    Lens Type: Soft mutifolcals, GP torics (astigmatic) GP Multifocals


    Types of Fitting:  New Medically Necessary Fit and Train

    Fee: Fee determined per visit

    Lens Type: Specialized designs for medical and post-surgical conditions


    Your contact lens prescription will be given after the initial fitting period is successfully completed (examination, fitting, and follow-up visits) and after all fees are paid. Fees for professional services, such as examination fees and contact lens fitting fees, are not refundable. Some lenses require an order deposit. Deposits are non-refundable.

  • CONTACT LENS CARE AND HANDLING

    Hygiene:

    1. Always wash hands with a non-lotion soap and rinse thoroughly.
    2. Dry hands with lint-free towel.

    Lens Package:

    1. Shake the lens package to be sure the lens is floating freely in the solution. 
    2. Peel back the foil and gently touch the lens with your fingertip. 
    3. Prop the lens shaped like a bowl on your fingertip and inspect. 
    4. The edge should be smooth and straight up. 
    5. Check for debris or lint; the lens should be clear and clean, free of chips or tears. 
    6. Verify that the lens is right side out.

    Insertion of the lens on the eye:

    1. Be sure the lens is centered on the tip of the finger. 
    2. Place the middle finger of the same hand on the lower eyelid at the base of the lashes. 
    3. Using the other hand, hold the upper lid firmly against the brow bone. 
    4. Place the lens on the eye. 
    5. Look around to orient the lens before releasing the eyelids. 
    6. Gently close and pat the lids. 

    NOTE: The lens should feel comfortable although tearing may occur. If any foreign body sensation occurs the lens should be re-centered. Look across the room to make sure the vision is clear.


    To re-center the lens:

    1. Slide the lens into the white portion of the eye. 
    2. Gently massage the lens back to the center.

    Removing the lens from the eye:

    1. Repeat hand washing. 
    2. Check to be sure the lens is centered on the cornea before attempting to remove. 
    3. Look up into the mirror: place the fingertip on the lens at 6 o’clock and slide down into the white part of the eye. 
    4. Hold the lens down with the forefinger and gently pinch the lens off with the thumb.

    Cleaning the lens:

    1. After removing the lens from your eye place it into the palm of your hand and cover with solution. 
    2. Rub the lens with the fingertip to remove mucus and debris. 
    3. Rinse the lens and place the lens in the case in fresh solution.
